What are systems of record?
Systems of record is the term used to describe the role that enterprise applications play in maintaining the state of the enterprise. ERP, CRM, SCM, and all the other enterprise applications keep important information concerning the company's finances, inventory, personnel, business partners, projects, and other issues. When we refer to systems of record, we are emphasizing how enterprise applications are an authoritative database. When enterprise applications were invented, the role of systems of record was perhaps their most important function. As time passed, however, the foundation provided by a consistent and authoritative database laid the foundation for expanded process automation of the sort that ESA expands further still.
