Capability to complete the contract was determined by the type
of equipment each company owned or controlled. Large dredges
are unique pieces of equipment that are expensive to manufacture
and costly to use and maintain, particularly when the equipment
would only be used over a short period of time during the spring,
summer, and fall seasons. Government agencies that control the
navigation regularly offer major dredging contracts on the river,
lakes, and harbors in this area, which is collectively known as the
St. Lawrence Seaway.
