What the directors, in this case, failed to take into account, however,
was that this particular Third World country was in the process of
going through a change of government. After taking ofce, the newly
appointed prime minister decided that there would be a full investi-
gation of the corrupt practices involving the previous administration.
The bribe payments that were made on this project were discovered
and the construction company, the CEO, and the entire board of direc-
tors became involved in the criminal investigation that followed.
