• If someone is rambling or has trouble focusing on the issues at
hand, maintain the focus of the dialogue in a respectful manner.
• Be impartial. Be sympathetic and understanding. Do not be judg-
mental. Do not give the impression that you will disapprove if
someone makes an admission of an improper act.
• Use an open and relaxed posture. Nod in agreement. Make eye
contact. Occasionally say, “OK,” “uh huh,” or some other afrma-
tive comment.
• Individuals who are genuinely trying to cooperate sometimes
make what appear to be inadvertent errors in terms of chronol-
