I had never planned to be an executive director of a nonprofit. I was working in New York City and saw a community that articulated a need for a creative workspace. Three years later, I find myself running SPACE on Ryder Farm, an artist residency program housed on a working organic farm in Brewster, New York. Despite my apparent lack of preparation for the role, in its first two seasons, SPACE has hosted over 200 artists; among these were Tony winners, Obie winners, and Pulitzer Prize finalists.
