From a Business Unit’s IT Roadmap to an Enterprise IT Roadmap

8.1 Chapter Objective

This chapter walks you, the reader, through the process of creating an IT roadmap for the overall enterprise, starting from one created for only one strategic business unit (SBU).

8.2 The “What”

Rather than beginning with an enterprise IT roadmap, some organizations (especially the larger ones) start, more often than not, with a roadmap for only one of its strategic business units or departments.

As this first undertaking becomes more successful and generates momentum, the organization may turn its individual IT roadmap into an enterprise-wide undertaking, following a process similar to the one shown in Figure 8.1.
