What does Istio bring to the table?
Istio is a service mesh that was originally developed by Google, IBM, and Lyft. It was introduced in mid-2017 and took off like a rocket. It brings a coherent model with a control and data plane, is built around the Envoy proxy, has a lot of momentum, and already serves as the foundation for additional projects. It is, of course, open source and a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) project. In Kubernetes, each Envoy proxy is injected as a sidecar container to each pod that participates in the mesh. Let's explore the Istio architecture, and then dive into the services that it provides.
