Standardizing on CSI
CSI is superior to in-tree plugins (and FlexVolume plugins). However, the current situation of a hybrid, where you can use either in-tree plugins (or FlexVolume plugins) or CSI plugins is suboptimal. The Kubernetes team has a detailed plan to migrate in-tree plugins to CSI.
