Managing third-party dependencies

There are three flavors of third-party dependencies:

  • Libraries and packages you build your software against (as discussed in Chapter 2, Getting Started with Microservices)
  • Third-party services that are accessed through an API by your code
  • Services you use to operate and run your system

For example, if you run your system in the cloud, then your cloud provider is a huge dependency (Kubernetes can help mitigate risk). Another great example is using a third-party service as your CI/CD solution. When choosing a third-party dependency, you relinquish some (or a lot) control.
