Chapter 29. Lab VII-2 Detect Cocaine and Methamphetamine on Paper Currency

Equipment and Materials

You’ll need the following items to complete this lab session. (The FK01 Forensic Science Kit for this book, available from http://www.thehomescientist.com, includes the items listed in the first group.)

Materials from Kit

  • Goggles

  • Forceps

  • Marquis reagent

  • Pipettes

  • Scott reagent

  • Specimen: diphenhydramine

  • Spot plate, 12-well

Materials you Provide

  • Gloves

  • Bag, small plastic zip-lock

  • Cotton balls, swabs, or paper towel

  • Currency specimens to be tested (see text)

  • Hair dryer (optional)

  • Water, distilled or deionized

Warning

Use extraordinary care when using Marquis reagent. It contains a concentrated solution of sulfuric acid, which is extremely corrosive.
