It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

– Application program sync point
If the program has not updated the control interval, the lock is released as part of
application program sync point processing.
– Output thread completion
If the program has updated the control interval, the lock is released when the output
thread completes. The output thread writes the control interval to DASD or to a
Coupling Facility cache structure. Cache structures are used for shared virtual storage
option (SVSO) AREAs.
Requestor
The requestor is the program that issues a DL/I call causing the control interval to be
accessed.
