17.1 Introduction on Real-Time Systems
17.1.1 Denition
A real-time system is a system in which the correctness of the results does not only depend on the logical
correctness
of
the
computations/operations
performed
to
obtain
them
but
also
on
the
time
the
results
are
obtained
[Kop97,Sta88].
Logically
correct,
but
late
results
can
be
either
not
useful
or
even
harmful
to
the
system,
depending
on
the
nature
of
the
application
considered.
Examples
of
real-time
applications
are
found
in
industrial
plant
controls,
automotive,
avionics,
industrial
automation,
robotics,
monitor-
ing
systems,
multimedia
systems,
telecommunications,
interactive
