Establishing the truth – or the reality – of a situation is the essential preliminary to knowing what is the best thing – or the least worst thing – to do.
Decisions based on wishful thinking, false assumptions, undetected errors, careless calculations, faulty figures or vain assurances are hardly likely to succeed, except by the unreliable intervention of luck.
A true leader will always speak the truth, for then their people will see the reality of the situation. Helping groups and organizations to do so and to respond appropriately lies at the very heart of leadership, especially in testing times. Consider the following story.
