‘Selection of top management is probably the most important of all decisions – for example, about board membership. A is retiring, in four years’ time: B and C follow soon after. Who are the likely candidates? There is now time to position them so that the experience will equip them for the board.’

So said the chairman of a company to me the other day. People decisions of this nature – not to mention other, more personal ones, such as whether or not to marry a particular person – are immensely important, both professionally and personally.
