This chapter provides an overview of the IP routing fundamentals, including the following issues:
Basic IP concepts The Internet Protocol provides service between hosts, and transfers information in the form of packets, with the assumption that the underlying networks consists of different media and technologies.
Variable-length subnet masking When an IP address is assigned to an organization, the network portion of the address is fixed, and the host portion is given to the organization to assign internal addresses. Organizations can further divide the network into smaller segments called subnets. In this section, we discuss variable-length subnet masking within this context.
