In the section on subnetting, you learned how a network is divided into smaller groups known as subnets. Each subnet is given an individual identity. All subnets need to be advertised by an algorithm within the autonomous system, and the network as a whole must be advertised outside the system.
To propagate the network within the autonomous system and beyond, routing protocolsare used. Routing protocols are divided into two types: First, Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs) are used to propagate routing information within an autonomous system. Second, Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGPs) are used to pass routing information between autonomous systems.
