The purpose of data analysis in research is to move from a set of raw data, such as the responses to a questionnaire or recordings of in-depth interviews, to knowledge that helps you to answer your research question. In the process you need to turn the raw data into something that provides meaning in relation to the research questions that you are trying to answer. In doing so you want to be confident that any conclusions you reach are justified by your data. You will also need to be able to communicate your findings, so an important aspect of data analysis is preparing output that is meaningful to others.
