The initial implementation of the Cisco Systems Inc. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) virtual private network (VPN) architecture provided support for several, but not all, routing protocols between the provider edge (PE) routers and customer edge (CE) routers. This initial support included Border Gateway Protocol (BGP-4), static routing, Routing Information Protocol (RIP) version 2 and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), each of which was described in detail in the first volume of this book.
