Summary
The 6PE solution (IPv6 transport across IPv4-only MPLS backbone) allows a seamless nonintrusive deployment of IPv6 pilot networks across existing IPv4 cores without the complexities associated with other early-deployment solutions (such as IPv6 tunnels across IPv4 backbones). The solution is similar in its concept to the MPLS VPN solution; IPv6 MP-BGP is extended with the capability to exchange MPLS labels associated with IPv6 prefixes between the PE routers. The labels associated with IPv6 prefixes are then used together with LDP-allocated labels to IPv4 BGP next-hops to build MPLS label stacks in IPv6 FIB tables. The MPLS label stacks, when imposed in front of IPv6 datagrams, enable transparent transport of IPv6 datagrams from an ingress ...
