How to use this book
There are several distinct kinds of introductions to ‘multimodality’ that you will find on the bookshelves. Some promise to provide what they call ‘toolkits’ for multimodal analysis. These toolkits include sets of ready-made distinctions to apply to images, films, advertisements and so on, perhaps suggesting ‘visual grammars’ or other kinds of ‘grammars’ for applying categories to examples of communication. Others work their way through various theoretical orientations that have traditionally been applied to the areas of ‘multimodality’ selected for concern. In both cases, the task for the reader is to learn to apply those frameworks to examples.
