The industrial edge plays a significant role in securely connecting and complementing cloud intelligence with on-premise operations. The edge layer may consist of one or more devices, such as a gateway to ingest high volume of time series machine data (for example, from temperature and pressure sensors), perform analytics on-site to remove unnecessary exposure of data, and offer low-latency controls for time-sensitive applications. An edge- and-cloud synchronized deployment model removes many limitations of a cloud-only IIoT strategy.
