Core and edge gateways
The evolution of legacy industrial networks into the industrial internet and Industrie 4.0 connectivity architectures has ushered in a new marketplace for industrial gateways. An industrial gateway acts as a mediator between legacy industrial network segments and modern IP-based IIoT platforms and applications. The gateway performs protocol translation, encapsulation, and so on. A protocol-translation gateway connects network segments by translating legacy, insecure communication protocols into modern, encrypted protocols and vice versa. These functions open up new attack surfaces, and it is recommended to have security engineering teams assess risk using threat modeling on a case-by-case basis.
