Physical security – the first line of defense

Physical security controls protect network assets (for example, routing equipment, data centers, computer platforms, remote field devices, and so on) from both natural and human threats such as fire, flood, natural disasters, unauthorized exploitation, and terrorism.

There are multiple ways to provide physical security:

• Perimeter protection: This is almost like building a physical "firewall" with blast-resistant glass, fence-mounted surveillance systems (cameras, temperature and touch sensors, alarms, and so on), equipment casings, or enclosures. This is the first line of defense to deter physical intrusion and to protect against natural threats.
