Business cases
Typically, every product or solution begins with a business case. Security and reliability should be considered when defining the problem, business objectives, vision, values, and customer usage in the business case. For example, the level of safety and security assurance expected from an autonomous vehicle software is different from those expected from a software controlling robot arms on a factory floor.
Defining a business case is usually considered a non-technical, management function. However, ensuring security alignment of business objectives, values, and vision can save valuable cycles if otherwise deferred to subsequent phases.
