プラットフォームエンジニアリングとは、プラットフォームを開発・運用する技術分野です。この分野の目標は、ビジネスにおけるレバレッジを実現するために、システム全体の複雑さを管理することにあります。これは、幅広いアプリケーション開発者たちに対し、ソフトウェアベースの抽象化を通じてプラットフォームを製品として開発し、ビジネスの基盤として運用することで実現されます。
この定義から、プラットフォームエンジニアリング実践の次の4つの柱を明確にできます。
- プロダクト（product）
- 厳選されたプロダクトアプローチの採用。
- 開発（development）
- ソフトウェアベースの抽象化の仕組みの開発。
- 幅広さ（breadth）
- 幅広いアプリケーション開発者向け基盤の提供。
- 運用（operations）
- ビジネスのための土台となる運用。
