Bonus plans, covered in Chapter 10, are contingent pay for a period of up to one year. In this chapter I cover long-term plans which provide potential financial value to the recipient over a period of more than one year. Typically, long-term plans deliver value in around three years.
Long-term plans aim to support retention and long-term performance as a balance to an annual plan that, by definition, rewards annual outcomes. There are two main categories of long-term plan: those paying out cash and those using company shares.
