Reward is important as it can cost up to 75 per cent of the total costs of the organization and it carries strong messages. It can play an important part in the engagement of people in the business. But this can only be where it is aligned with the culture and strategy of the business.
Reward may be proactive and seek to help drive business strategy. However, very great care needs to be taken to avoid unintended consequences. Evidence suggests that reward can have positive impact in the short term but may have limited impact in sustaining change in the long term.
