6.1 Introduction
There are many books on Six Sigma, but there remains much confusion about the topic, part of which is about whether Six Sigma is an application of statistics and whether it is only a fad or a philosophy—or even a revelation. Our view is that Six Sigma is a tool, a very useful one, but only a tool nonetheless. As a tool, Six Sigma is useful in the hands of those who know what they want and what to do with it and useless or even dangerous in the hands of others.
