In outline, the computer performs the following operations to
execute this task:

loads
the program, i.e. makes a copy of it in RAM

the file (in RAM) by obeying the command sequences in the
word processing program telling it how to add the additional
words that I type and how to incorporate any amendments I make
to existing material

saves
the file, i.e. makes
