Phase modulation
(PM)
This can be used to carry digital information, and involves reversing
the phase of the carrier wave each time
a
binary

is encountered. The
process is also illustrated in Figure 6.5.
Multiplexing
This is the term used to describe techniques which allow
a
number of
different signals to use the same transmission link (normally air space
in the case of
radio,
wire in the case of telephone). The use of carrier
waves is one multiplexing technique. Another, suitable for use with
