Replication Server requires a system database just like an Adaptive Server Enterprise needs a system database. Replication Server 12.6 and above support Embedded Replication Server System Database (ERSSD). ERSSD is an alternative to RSSD. RSSD needs an Adaptive Server Enterprise running, whereas ERSSD uses an Adaptive Server Anywhere. An Adaptive Server Anywhere is a minimally managed server. When ERSSD is selected during Replication Server installation, there is no additional installation and configuration requirement. ERSSD is automatically installed, configured, and started in the background if you specify that you want to use it. Backup procedures are automatic and preconfigured.
