Appendix C
Abbreviations and Metric Equivalents
In today’s multinational and multicultural world, it’s wise to identify abbreviations and include both U.S. customary units and metric units. This appendix shows many that are commonly used and how to apply them. It also has tables of chemical elements, postal abbreviations, and metrics and U.S. equivalents.
Writing Abbreviations
Write out names or expressions the first time they appear. Thereafter, use abbreviations. If you’re absolutely sure the reader will understand your reference, however, there’s no need to write it out. When you do need to explain your reference, here’s how to present it:
Write out random access memory (RAM) the first time you mention it in a document. Thereafter, you may use RAM because you already identified the reference for the reader.
Treat the company or organization name as the company treats it. For example, if a company uses Company, don’t write Co. Check the company website or letterhead for accuracy. If you can’t check it out, write it out.

If you deliver a paper document to a wide range of readers, some of whom may not understand your abbreviations, consider including a glossary of terms and abbreviations at the end of your document.
