In the past, motivated employees who wanted to earn extra income and/or become less dependent on a single source of income would take on a second job at a second company. In other words, they would moonlight.
Moonlighting simply refers to having a second job in addition to one's regular employment.
Most moonlighters would get a second job at a call center, restaurant, or somewhere else where the hours were either evening shift, night shift, or at least flexible. The problem is that for the motivated employee, moonlighting meant being out of the house and away from family.
