3Introduction to Complexity Dimensions
3.1 Overview of Factors Influencing Complexity
As mentioned previously, the concept of complexity in project management has been a subject of interest and study in recent years. As projects become more elaborate and interconnected, understanding the dimensions or factors that contribute to their complexity becomes important for effective management and successful results. As the Project Management Institute points out, the focus should be on project success instead of project management success. Note that from now on, the terms “complexity dimensions” and “complexity factors” will be used interchangeably and have the same meaning.
This section provides an overview of the various factors (sometimes we refer to them as complexity dimensions) that influence project complexity, drawing from extensive research and practical observations in the field. Note that this is not (and cannot be) a final list of complexity factors, but a series of well‐known ones.
Complexity in projects is not just a function of size or duration but covers a multitude of interrelated factors that can significantly impact project planning, execution, and results. The literature review conducted as part of the author's doctoral research has identified several key dimensions of complexity that consistently appear across various studies and practical experiences.
