25Simplifying Complexity
25.1 Recommendations
Managing complex projects presents unique challenges that require strategic approaches to simplify and explore complexity. While it is impossible to eliminate complexity, project managers can implement several techniques to reduce its impact and improve project outcomes. In previous chapters, many recommendations were given throughout this book, but this section presents a summarized list for simplifying project complexity, drawing from established research and industry best practices.
25.1.1 Embrace Systems Thinking
One fundamental approach to simplifying complexity is adopting a systems thinking perspective. Systems thinking involves understanding the project rather than focusing solely on individual components. Senge (2006) argues that systems thinking is relevant for managing complex environments, as it allows project managers to identify and use the interconnections between different project elements.
To implement systems thinking in complex projects:
- Develop a holistic project view, considering all stakeholders, resources, and environmental factors
- Identify and map the relationships between different project components
- Analyze feedback loops and potential effects of decisions across the project system
- Encourage team members to consider the broader impact of their actions on the entire project
Using a systems thinking approach, ...
