10.1.1 Understanding This Dimension

In the context of project management, knowledge and experience refer to the collective understanding and skills of the project team, particularly the project manager. The level of knowledge and experience within a project team can mitigate or increase project complexity, making it an important dimension to consider in complex project environments.

Knowledge in project management encompasses explicit knowledge (information that can be easily transmitted) and tacit knowledge (personal, context‐specific expert that is harder to formalize and communicate). Experience, on the other hand, refers to the practical exposure and lessons learned from previous projects, especially similar ones, which often result in the development of judgment that can be used when managing complex projects.

Baccarini (1996) argues that project complexity can be subjective, depending on the project manager's knowledge and experience. What might be considered a highly complex project for an inexperienced project manager could be relatively easy for an experienced professional. This subjective nature of complexity emphasizes the importance of aligning project responsibilities to the appropriate level of expertise within the organization.
