16.1.1 Understanding This Dimension
Stakeholder interaction and engagement encompass the elaborate web of relationships, communications, and influences among various project stakeholders, both internal and external to the organization.
Stakeholders are individuals, groups of people, or organizations interested in or that can affect or be affected by the project (PMI 2017). They can include project team members, sponsors, customers, end‐users, suppliers, government agencies, and local communities. The interaction and engagement with these diverse stakeholders can significantly impact the project's complexity, as each stakeholder may have different expectations, requirements, and levels of influence on the project.
The complexity of stakeholder interaction and engagement can be categorized into different levels, ranging from projects with few stakeholders and straightforward interactions to those with numerous stakeholders with conflicting interests and complex interdependencies. As projects become more complex, the number and diversity of stakeholders typically increase, leading to more elaborate stakeholder environments that require sophisticated management approaches.
