Amazon EC2 ではサーバーを初めて作成する際や追加する際などに、
AMI（Amazon Machine Image）と呼ばれるテンプレートがあり、インス
タンスにサーバーOSがセットアップされた状態で提供されます。サーバ
ーを作成する際に最初のステップでAMIを選択します。
AMIには、サーバーOSは何で、だいたいどのようなサーバーであるか
が明示されているので、初めにユーザーは要件に近いAMIを選択して、続
いてインスタンスタイプを選択するという順番でサーバーの作成を進めて
いきます（図3-11）。
新規にサーバー（EC2）を作成する際にはあらかじめ用意されている
AMIを選択しますが、サーバーを増やす場合にAMIを活用する方法もあり
ます。
テンプレートとしてのAMIと利便性
AMIはインスタンスがどのようなソフトウェアで構成されているかを示
すテンプレートでもあり、インスタンスの起動でも利用できます。
例えば、この後解説していくように、サーバーOSがLinuxで、Apache
をインストールしていて設定済みなどの情報が記録できます。
したがって、コピーして同じサーバーを作成したいときなどに有効で
す。1台目はOS以外を順次インストールしていきますが、2 台目は AMIを
利用して以前に作成したインスタンスから複製することもできます（図
3-12）。
AMIをユーザーが自作する場合は、インスタンスの作成後にイメージの
作成で行います。
