Después de servir a su país en la primera guerra mundial, Darwin Eatna Smith regresó a Estados Unidos. Era un tipo tranquilo que había decidido labrarse un futuro. Asistía a clases nocturnas en la Universidad de Indiana, pero tenía que trabajar durante el día en International Harvester para costearse la carrera. Durante un turno de trabajo, perdió un dedo en un accidente. Darwin no le dio la más mínima importancia: aquella misma tarde fue a clase y, al día siguiente, se presentó en su puesto.

En 1958 empezó a trabajar en el departamento legal de Kimberly-Clark; un año después ya era abogado de la firma. Pasó a ser miembro del Consejo de Administración en 1967, y presidente del Consejo y director general en 1971.
