Alternative to master – slave replication

With a single master server replication, the following can be potential issues:

• Automatic primary/secondary role assignment
• Automatic new primary election on primary failures
• Automatic setup of read/write modes on primary and secondaries
• Globally consistent view of which server is the primary

If you use the group replication mechanism, these issues are taken care of automatically, and no manual intervention is required. It is a very strong use case, as it can reduce downtime significantly, and fail over happens within milliseconds, although clients need to re-establish fresh connections.
