The great Charles Eames, half of the legendary California design house Eames Studio, once commented that far more important than innovation is the process of iteration. After all, while an automobile with the driver’s seat facing backward could be called innovative, would it actually advance the design of the motorcar? In fact, it would do the exact opposite. But in design, the craft of iteration—for I believe it is a craft—can lead to constant improvement via experimentation and abstraction.
