When you’re planning for the worst, how much insurance do you buy? Look for high value and high likelihood of risk. Spend to protect the high-value stuff, and avoid spending to protect the low-value stuff. Segment the problem by storage tier and SLA. Look for inexpensive, “good enough” solutions for the most commonly encountered problems, such as drive failure, cable failure, and server failure. And for the less likely stuff, like natural disasters, reserve spending for only the most important storage.
