Larry Ellison says (paraphrased), “The cloud is all the stuff we are already doing”, and from Mr. Ellison’s technology-centered point of view, I agree with him. It’s the same applications-operating systems- servers-storage-networks, with a few differences. What’s different is consolidation and scale. How many IT departments deal with more than 100,000 customers, with more than 100,000 servers, with relentless pressure on operational and capital expenses, with a weekly CEO/CIO level report of new customers and lost customers? Hosting and cloud businesses do go out of business. The strong survive, the weak are acquired.
