When an incident occurs, even if it does not rise to the level of a disaster, there needs to be an organized response. For example, if a single workstation is infected with a virus, this probably does not constitute a disaster. But if it is not responded to quickly, it may grow into a disaster as the virus spreads, so proper incident response is important.
There are some key steps that every incident response plan must include. These are outlined in this section. You will also find some sources refer to the six phases of incident response; others will list five or seven phases. The issue is not how finely you break out the steps, but that all necessary steps are done, and done at the appropriate time.
