Chapter 2. DSL Impairments and Their Remedies

Several factors of the existing voice telephony (POTS) infrastructure can slow down or prevent the implementation of DSL. These factors range from the inconvenience and delay of line sharing among incumbent and competitive providers (this is mainly a business and regulatory consideration) to the DSL-preventing use of load coils. Other factors include normal attenuation and the types and locations of differing modulation technologies, such as T1/E1, both within the wire plant and in the central office itself.
