Later on I’ll briefly talk about how to contribute to FOSS projects released by your company, but the majority of this chapter assumes that what you want to do is contribute to projects that are external to your company. These could be libraries or tools that your company uses as a part of its products or services, or it could be a project that you’re fond of for some reason. While the tips are the same for both of these categories, you may find that you have more luck gaining permission to contribute to projects that are somehow important for your company to continue operating.
