Formal definition
A formal definition of ML, as stated by Tom Mitchell, is explained as follows.
A computer program is said to learn from experience E with respect to some task T and some performance measure P, if its performance on T, as measured by P, improves with experience E.
This definition beautifully captures the essence of what ML is in a very concise manner. Let's take an example from the real world to understand it better.
