Idea 36: Not a crowd but individuals
A large audience can be intimidating, even to an experienced speaker. But when you think about your audience, think of them not as a mass of people but as a number of individual persons who have collected themselves together for the purpose of hearing you.
Many years ago in Indianapolis, an old preacher asked why I was so tense. ‘Because,’ I replied, ‘there are 5,000 people out there expecting me to be helpful.’
‘No, there aren’t,’ he said. ‘There’s only one person, Charles. No one hears you as a crowd. Everyone hears you as an individual.’
