4 Understand the strategic context

Before you start as leader of the team, you should try to understand the strategic context within which your team is required to operate and succeed. You can’t start leading your team in a vacuum. There is already a strategic context and timeline, which you need to familiarise yourself with so that the mission for your team is connected into that bigger picture.

Understand the strategic context company vision, strategy, the competition, market dynamics and opportunities, strategic timeline

At a macro level:

  • What is the company vision, mission and strategy?
  • What is the CEO agenda?
  • Who are the key competitors?
  • What are the market dynamics?
  • Is this company winning or losing?
  • Where are the market opportunities? ...
