1. The provisions of LMS:2012 itself are directly below the numbered
heading. The words shall and must refer to mandatory provisions
against which the LMS is to be audited. Shall and must will be italicized
to emphasize mandatory provisions.
a. The words can and may refer to optional or recommended features
of the LMS. As an example, “The LMS can and should be incorpo-
rated into an existing quality management system (QMS) to avoid
duplication of effort and conflicting directives.” It doesn’t have to,
but maintaining a separate LMS is likely to lead to unnecessary
work.
